Family Engagement
Advocate
Pod advisors are a liaison between families and the school. Keep in touch!
The benefit of having students assigned to one adult is intentional. It allows for the school to be in open communication with families. Having a high family involvement helps with pushing the student to their full potential academically. Socially, we can all ensure that we are doing everything that can be done to best support the student. As a school we feel that parents/families are an important aspect of the student's learning team.
Contact Information
Having both student and family contact information, as well as being in close contact, is just one piece of programming that makes CNHS unique. It is extremely important to keep student information updated. You may need to a call a parent if you have any concerns or success stories to share about a student. You will definitely need contact information when scheduling POL's as you must determine parent/guardians availability for student presentations. Having these number accessible (stored in your phone) is useful, especially in crisis situations.
Advisors may give students their numbers. This becomes very useful if a student needs to contact them for anything. Giving out your number to students doesn't mean that you have to answer student calls at all hours of the night and on weekends. Feel free to give students parameters of times in which they can and cannot call you. You may feel more comfortable with a text instead.
Be sure that families have a way of getting in contact with you; your phone number, the school number, and/or your school email. This is just another way in which we try to maintain open communication between families and the school. Doing so will be greatly beneficial.
Family Activities
Having family activities for parents is a way to keep parents engaged and informed about what is going on both at school and in advisory. It is an opportunity for you to pass along information regarding trips, pod activities, POL's, community service hours opportunities, etc. Just like your advisory, it is a way to build a cohesive group amongst parents. It is also a way to receive help with different activities in advisory, such as; trips, Pot Lucks, workshops, and others for which you could use a volunteer. After all, it does take a village to raise a child. The more support you have from parents, the easier it will be to win over their children. Having a family activity/meeting is not something that needs to happen once a month; it is something that you should do every quarter.
