One on one time is a time for the advisor to check in with the students. During this time you can check in with students to get a feel of how things are going with classes. Students will use this time to provide updates with what is going on inside/outside of school. When you first start meeting with students you want to make sure you are giving each student a time to meet with you. Giving them their time will help in building their trust in you. As students begin to gain more trust in you, they will reach out to you and share information on their own throughout the day.
Checking in serves as a way for your to build good rapport with your students on a one to one basis. It shows the students that you care about their well being. Many students tend to shut down and not want to do anything when they are “going through it.” Having an understanding about the students and their moods really helps as you work with the students. It is also beneficial when teaching them how to be productive regardless of the situations they are faced with.

Work Time
Independent Work Time: Independent work time is a time for students to work on anything that they may need to get done for any of their classes. The student may also use the time to complete other items, such as; completing applications for a job, reading, searching for colleges, etc. It all depends on the students and what they need to get done. The amount of time that a student has for independent work time in 9th grade will look totally different form the amount of IWT that an 11th grader has. As you grow with the students you will be able to asses if having independent work time is productive for your students. If it is, you will continue to allow for students to have it, if not you will make adjustments and fill it with another pod structure.
Project Work Time: Part of what makes us unique are the projects that we do at City Neighbors High School. Students often talk about wanting more time to work on and complete the different projects. Pod is a good opportunity time to give students time to work on these different projects. In 10th grade students will be given an opportunity to explore a topic of interest. In order to complete the project they will need time to work.
Giving students both IWT and PWT is a great way to teach students about time management and the use of their time. Students should be clear that IWT and PWT are a given and not a must. How they use their time will determine how much work time they will have or not.
